Eating Away at Pain: The Best Diets to Fight Gout
What do Leonardo da Vinci, Henry VIII and Benjamin Franklin have in common? Other than the fact that they are famous figures in history, they also suffered from a painful inflammatory form of arthritis called gout. During their time, gout was considered as the disease of well-to-do, middle-aged men and with good reason. Diet had a lot to do with the occurrence of gout and many of the rich cuisine these men appreciated were directly responsible for their suffering. So, what are the best diets for gout?
But first, what causes gout pain and discomfort? One of the contributing causes of gout is the high purine content of certain foods. Purine is broken down by the process of digestion and becomes uric acid. Too much purine in the body leads to the excess production of uric acid crystals. These crystals become embedded in the joints, ankles and feet. They may also appear in the connective tissues.
Uric acid crystals are sharp, causing the pain and swelling associated with gout. Since increased intake of purine-rich foods can lead to gout, the best diets to fight or prevent gout are naturally foods that are low or devoid of these substances. Some of the foods that you should avoid if you have gout are seafood (particularly shrimps and lobster) and red meat.
What is the best diet for gout? If you don?t have gout yet, it's best to start changing your diet now. If you already have it, your symptoms may be helped by avoiding foods that contribute to gout. According to the American Medical Association, the best diets for gouts are:
- foods that are low in protein - foods that are low in fat - foods that are high in complex carbohydrates
Since protein is an important contributor to health, best get yours from healthful sources such as soy, soy products and poultry. Fat intake must consist of 30% or lower of your maximum calorie intake with animal fats consisting only 10% of that amount. It's also advisable to eat fiber-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Foods that are rich in Vitamins A, C, E and those that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids are also recommended. Low-fat dairy products have also shown some promise in helping lower the risk of gout.
Should I totally eliminate purines from my diet? There are foods that contain purine in moderate amounts but will actually NOT increase your risk of developing gout. These are chicken, turkey, duck, ham, asparagus, whole grain cereals and breads, mushrooms and spinach. It's perfectly all right to include them in your diet as long as they are taken in moderation. These are good sources of protein (and of purines) and should not be totally excluded.
Is a good diet enough? A diet designed to help prevent gout and gout attacks is quite effective but it would be best to combine this with a regular exercise regimen. By maintaining a body weight that is within normal range, you not only avoid painful gout attacks, you can also lower your chances of developing gout if you don?t have it yet.
